Summer time treats

As the summer months are approaching, so is the HEAT! Don't let kids fool you into giving them double fudge chocolate chip ice cream every day when there are plenty of healthy frozen treats they will enjoy eating and making. Read more.

1. Frozen juice pops. Bring out the plastic ice cube trays that are stored in the back of the freezer and make popsicles. Wash and dry the trays thoroughly before pouring the juice into them. You can use any brand or any flavor of juice. The best part is that each cube can be a different or they can be all the same flavor depending on your child's preference. If you measure each cube, you can have your children pour their favorite juice into the tray without overflowing.

2. Frozen fruit bars. Apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, or almost any type of fruit your kids enjoy can be frozen into a delicious treat. Frozen fruit not only lasts longer than fresh fruit in the fridge, it basically has the same amount of nutrients and only slightly alters the taste. More or less sour; more or less sweet - all depends on the type of fruit and the duration of time it spends freezing. Have fun experimenting!

3. Frozen yogurt. Want to make frozen yogurt at home? All you need is a blender, frozen fruit, yogurt, and your choice of toppings. After mixing the ingredients to the consistency of your liking, you may serve it or freeze it longer. Your kids will enjoy putting on their own toppings. If you give them a variety of healthy choices, they won't feel restricted and may not even realize it's all healthy.
